Davido's Timeless Body of Work
Is Timeless your GOAT Davido album?
The hallmark of a great album is the coherence between each song and how well they flow together. When this coordination is paired with exceptional song quality, the resulting listening experience is truly remarkable. My experience with Davido's latest album, "Timeless," cemented this viewpoint. After taking a break from the music scene last year, Davido announced his return in March of this year. However, it was not until last month that fans learned his comeback would come with a full album. Despite the positive reception of his previous two studio albums among Nigerians, some found them lacking and believed that he had the potential to create something even greater.
The night A Better Time was released, I was filled with an overwhelming sense of excitement. The songs sounded terrific upon first listen, each one leaving me stunned and eager for more. In fact, each track was so phenomenal that I struggled to choose a favourite—a predicament that lasted for quite some time, and even today, my favourite song from the album changes frequently.
Many other listeners were similarly captivated by the album's initial offerings. However, after a few months, the reception began to shift. Criticisms of the album began to surface, and many people started to express concerns that the album lacked cohesion. Despite these opinions, I remained steadfast in my adoration of ABT.
I revisited the album from start to finish, hoping to understand the criticisms against it better. As I listened, I began noticing subtle nuances and intricacies I had overlooked during my initial excitement. While it's possible that this was due to confirmation bias on my part, I also believe that the album required a more attentive ear to fully appreciate its artistry. Today, two years and five months later, ABT remains an absolute classic. I am yet to grow tired of its incredible sound and will undoubtedly continue to cherish it for years to come.
Timeless, however, felt like a project that was made with great attention to detail. The production, continuity, and everything else was on point. Upon repeated listens, I developed a greater appreciation for the significance of a cohesive theme in an album as opposed to just a collection of individually excellent songs. As I listened to it more and more, I fell even more in love with it, and it's not surprising that it has quickly become known as Davido's greatest album, even after just three weeks. The way the tracks progress from one to another is seamless, and each one leaves you yearning for more. It's the kind of album you could put on repeat while you work or engage in other activities, and before you know it, time has flown by. The combination of the songs, the lyrics, and the overall sound and flow of the album creates a captivating experience that truly stands out.
My Top 3 Songs on Timeless
Kante: At midnight when this album was released, I was already drowsy and not really in the mood to listen to music with any level of engagement. I had initially planned to put on the album and allow it to play in the background without paying attention. However, when I heard this particular track, something about it immediately caught my attention and jolted me awake. Fave's commanding and powerful voice resonated with me, and I found myself sitting up straight and reaching to turn up the volume of my speakers, even though it was already quite late at night. It was a transformative experience that reset my brain and made me fully engage with the music and the album in a way I hadn't initially anticipated.
Feel: "Feel" is a track that has the potential to be a chart-topper. It's a song that makes you feel like you’re floating every time you listen. It's the kind of track that leaves you with goosebumps and a feeling of euphoria even after it's finished.
Godfather: I didn't pay much attention to this track at first. However, once I did, it was like awakening a sleeping beast. The line "Igbadun is important" taught me that treating myself is essential, even if it means spending my last 2k on Suya and Chivita Ice Tea and being broke for the rest of the month.
Davido, you do this one!
This album is nothing short of extraordinary, with tremendous, mind-blowing potential. Davido's mastery of Afrobeats is on full display here, and he once again proves why he's a force to be reckoned with in the industry. Every track on the album is a testament to his skill as a musician, and it's clear that he poured his heart and soul into creating this masterpiece. From start to finish, the album is a tour de force of creativity, with each song building on the last to create an unforgettable listening experience. With this release, Davido further solidifies his place among the all-time greats, and it's clear that his talent and passion for his craft know no bounds.
